Its actually not an old wives tale, its an Amish belief that cameras steal your soul. I'm thinking he just added in that part about it taking a year from your lifespan.

The belief behind it is founded in most other religions as you're taking a part of them in that film. They believe if you lose a part of your body (hair, fingernails, skin, blood w/e) then your soul is also going with it. Somehow pictures are stealing a part of your body. I guess its because their image is "trapped" inside of that paper.

Still in other cultures, where cameras aren't readily found such as third-world countries, the taking of pictures is a taboo as well. Because they do not understand what the camera is, it is something to be feared. This is akin to when English settlers came to the new world with their, "boom sticks." (Aka: the gun or firearm)

'course, there's always the last reason. They just don't like their picture taken! Cameras stealing one's soul is just the excuse given when they have to give a reason as to why.
